I am a 23 year old student at Shepherd University in my fifth year. I graduated in 2009 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree and a major in English. Prior to my original graduation, since my second year at the University, I had gone back and forth with the idea of obtaining a double major. Originally I decided against the idea but immediately upon graduation realized I had made a mistake and applied for readmission the following Monday in order to obtain my Bachelor of Science with a major in Mass Communication. My primary drive for wanting to obtain my Mass Communication degree was my love for radio and thirst to gain more knowledge of the field.
I started actively participating in my University’s radio station, 89.7 WSHC Shepherdstown, in 2008. When I first started, I was an Entertainment reporter for the now defunct live news show broadcast and a DJ with my own specialty show. My show is called the Late Night Double Feature, which began on Wednesday nights, but eventually moved to it’s current time slot of Monday evenings at 10 pm till midnight. I run that show with my longtime friend and former roommate, Chris Jones. Since starting at 89.7, I have moved up from being a mild participant to a more active member. Presently I am the News and PSA Manager for the station, in addition to being an active DJ.
Because of my love for broadcast, when it came time to do my second senior capstone, I decided it had to revolve around radio. I just needed a concept and a theme. I was most comfortable in the DJ chair so the concept of another show didn’t frighten me in the slightest. But that was not enough for a semester long project. As I thought more about it and tried to think of what type of show I’d want to have, it struck me. I could do a show that featured show tunes, something that mainstream radio rarely, if ever, played. But to make it a more in depth project, I could make it an informative show as well. This blog grew from that initial idea. As “The Stage and Musical Show” broadcasts through March and April, I will update with blog and upload podcasts that are relevant to my topic.
My hope is that through the broadcasts and my supplementary material, my followers will not only be able to enjoy wonderful musicals but also learn something as well.
